Announcement of Multimillion Campus Investment

The Institute of Technology Tallaght has secured a multimillion euro capital investment to deliver a significant part of its overall campus development plan. This announcement follows a rigorous competitive and prioritization process managed by the Department of Education & Skills with the Higher Education Authority. The funding will provide state-of-the art facilities for a Technical Development Centre (i.e. practice-based learning facilities for Engineering and Science programmes); facilities for the Culinary Arts and Hospitality disciplines including new classrooms and computer laboratories.

The announcement was made jointly (16th October) by Minister for Education and Skills, Richard Bruton TD, and Minister of State for Higher Education, Mary Mitchell O'Connor TD,  as part of a total of 11 Institutes of Technology are to share €200m for major building projects to be built under the  Public Private Partnership Programme (PPP). Minister Bruton stated “I have set the ambition to make Ireland the best education and training service in Europe within a decade. State of the art facilities are key to realising this ambition.”

Minister of State for Higher Education, Mary Mitchell O'Connor TD stated “Institutes of Technology have been disproportionately affected by the fall-off in capital investment in higher education over the past decade. And yet they have still shown a level of flexibility and innovation that rivals any other sector. In recent times the infrastructure hasn’t evolved or improved quickly enough to match their dynamism. We’re starting the process of changing that today. Many of our Institutes are working towards the attainment of Technological University status and the new infrastructure will support them in that aim".

President of the Institute of Technology Tallaght, Thomas Stone said, “This is a very important announcement for our Institute and the South Dublin County region.  This injection of capital funding to deliver part of our campus development plan will greatly enhance the student experience and will support the delivery of the highest quality education, research and training for our region. It represents a statement of support for the Institute at the highest level, recognising not only our past achievements and significant contribution to the region, its communities and its industrial development, but also the Institute’s strategic vision for the future on its path to be a multi-campus Technological University.”
